For healthy returns, inject foreign aid into vaccines, says Gates

Ben Doherty

Bill Gates speaks at the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) 2010 mHealth Summit in Washington November 9, 2010.

It delivers more bang for the tax bucks, writes Ben Doherty in Delhi.

THE world’s biggest philanthropist has urged Australia – now reviewing its foreign aid program and defending it against allegations of corruption – to put more money towards vaccinating Third World children.

In an exclusive interview with the Herald, Bill Gates said funding vaccines in developing countries was the least-corruptible and best value-for-money aid governments could offer. But he said foreign aid had a poor image, a ”Cold War reputation”, among the taxpayers who fund it, and that governments needed to do a better job selling the benefits of it.

ManWatch | Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Actor/Model

March 25, 2011 Leave a comment

Such hypnotic eyes! In my humble opinion, Mr Meyers is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood. He seems to have done it all. His film and TV roles range from Elvis, King Henry VIII and that soccer coach everyone had a crush on in Bend it Like Beckham. Did I mention that one could get lost in his eyes?

Stan Van Gundy says MVP race over

By Chris Sheridan ESPN.com

NEW YORK — Stan Van Gundy believes the MVP race is already over, and Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls is going to win it.

“I don’t think it’s wide open. The media seems to have made their decision, and they’re the ones that vote. So I think it’s over,” Van Gundy said Wednesday night as his Orlando Magic prepared to play the New York Knicks. “I mean, I just listen and read. I think it’s over. Derrick Rose has it. I haven’t really read or heard a media guy who is going another way at this point. I’d be shocked if he doesn’t win it.”

Dismissed as a joke, Twitter revolutionises the way we communicate

Karl Quinn and Kylie Northover
March 22, 2011

WHETHER you think Twitter is the greatest thing to happen to communications since Gutenberg or the worst, there’s plenty of evidence to support your views. For the prosecution we have Charlie Sheen, who attracted 1 million followers in 25 hours and 17 minutes earlier this month as his manic ranting spiralled out of control; at last count, his not-so-bons mots had more than 3 million followers.

MovieReview | 127 Hours (2010)

It’s a whole new take on never giving up on yourself.127 Hours is revolutionary in that it takes an inspirational story and renders it in groundbreaking fashion. James Franco lights up the screen as Aron Ralston with his Canon camcorder and winning smile. I noticed there wasn’t much dialogue which gives us that raw, unscripted feel to the movie.

*SPOILER ALERT*

It starts and ends with a bang with the triple screen effect which gives us three different angles on particular moments. I did get a little impatient in the middle but then again so did Aron, chipping away at the rock and his sanity at the same time. Determined to make out alive, Aron refuses to give up his whole being and sacrifices his arm instead, With superb acting and fresh rapid cut camera angles, this is a must-watch movie. James Franco keeps it real in this one so I gotta give it 4/5 stars.

Blogs & other drugs: On Writing

March 21, 2011 Leave a comment

When it comes to writing and facing a blank page, I’d rather be doing something else. Like watching a movie or hanging out with friends. Maybe even have a snack or just lounge around doing nothing.

My point is this – writer’s block drives me up the wall. Ever noticed how alone you feel when you start a piece of writing? Or how frustration creeps in without warning? Most writers would agree that we all have some kind of a love-hate relationship with writing.

Read The Lonely Road of a Writer for more insights into this phenomenon.

Note to self #2 Wardrobe

March 20, 2011 Leave a comment

I really need to stop buying clothes. I have tons of clothes in Syd and my wardrobe here is almost bursting at the seams. My love for fashion seems to have been re-invigorated during my stay here.

As a self-proclaimed stylist/ photographer, people expect me to be able to put a stylish outfit together. I need to practice my visualization skills in order to save time organizing an outfit before I head out the door.
